Louisa Briggs Day at Melbourne Grammar School

Reconciliation Victoria’s Education Officer was invited to be part of celebrations for Louisa Briggs birthday at Melbourne Grammar, Grimwade house on the 14th of November.

Louisa Briggs was born in 1836, and was a proud Boon Wurrung woman. She was a survivor of the first stolen generations of Australia’s southern invasion, and became a vocal civil rights campaigner, who fought tirelessly for her people, and to hold colonial authorities to account.

As part of their commitment to truth telling and reconciliation in education, Grimwade house celebrated Louisa Briggs’ birthday with a special assembly. The students from the school’s RAP services group spoke about Louisa’s life, and about the importance of reconciliation in education. Butchulla rapper, Birdz (Nathan Bird) was interviewed by the students about his music, and following the assembly, Birdz ran workshops for students, talking about his music, culture, and language.
